Remember when we just used a line level and eyeballed it?

I been in the fence game since 2003 and the number of guys who show up with a laser level and still can't get the posts plumb drives me nuts. Last week I fixed a job a kid did where he trusted his laser over a 4-foot bubble level and the whole run was off by half a foot. Why do people think fancy tools replace basic skills?

Half a foot off?! Man, that's not even close, that's a whole different dimension of wrong. Lasers are great but you still gotta check your work the old way.

Buddy of mine spent a whole day laying out a paver patio with a laser level. Looked perfect on the display. Next morning he steps out and the whole thing slopes toward his house like a ski jump. Turns out the laser got bumped an inch overnight and he never rechecked a single string line. Water was pooling up against the foundation by noon. He tore the whole thing up and did it with a 4-foot level and a chalk line.
