I always heard utility locates were for big jobs, so I skipped it on a home fence. Hit a gas line and now I'm the talk of the block for all the wrong reasons.

Saw a news article once where a homeowner hit a gas line digging a post hole. In my experience, the locate services are there for a reason, even for small jobs. Your mileage may vary, but better safe than sorry.

That news article you mentioned is exactly why I never skip calling for locates. @charlesm11 is right, it's just common sense even for minor digging. The possible damage is huge, and people can get hurt real bad. I don't care how small the job seems, always make that call. Being lazy here can cost you everything.

When you said "I don't care how small the job seems," that really hit home. I mean, I used to skip calling for locates on little things, thinking it was overkill. But hearing about cases like the one @charlesm11 brought up totally changed my view. Maybe it's just me, but seeing how badly things can go wrong makes you realize it's never worth the risk. Idk, now I always make that call, even for what feels like nothing.
