A customer in Dayton asked me to build a fence around his old oak tree

He said, 'Don't hurt the roots, just work with them.' I had to hand-dig the post holes for a 15 foot section and curve the panels around the trunk. It took two days but the look was worth it. Anyone else had to build around a big tree like that?

My buddy had to do something similar last fall. He spent a whole day just cutting boards to fit around this massive pine. Looked wild when it was done.

Sounds like a huge waste of time to me. Cutting all those custom pieces just makes a weak spot in the fence line. That tree is going to keep growing and push the whole section out of whack. You're better off just setting the fence line a few feet back and giving the tree its own space. All that fancy work for something that will probably look bad in a couple years anyway.

Read that's actually a common trick in older neighborhoods, those custom cuts can last decades if done right.
