My sewing teacher's advice on bias tape finally clicked

My old sewing teacher Mrs. Chen told me to stop fighting with store bought bias tape and just make my own... I wasted about 8 months and $30 on pre-made stuff that always puckered on my curved hems. Finally tried making my own last week using her method with a 2 inch strip cut at 45 degrees and it laid perfectly flat on my summer dress. Has anyone else found a technique they ignored at first that ended up being a game changer?

Took me three tries to realize pressing seams open first makes everything lay flatter.

My Singer 4423 was acting up until I started pressing everything open first. Ironed a 1/4 inch seam allowance for some quilting cotton last week and it made a huge difference. No more puckering around the curves on that stupid collar piece. Then you can go back and finger press the whole thing flat after stitching the second seam. Keeps the fabric from getting all twisted up.
