I saw a huge change in my designs after I started sketching with a basic ballpoint pen instead of fancy markers. What gives?

So you're forced to focus on line weight and shape instead of color filling everything in, right? Like with a marker you might just block in a shadow, but a pen makes you actually think about the cross-hatching. It strips away the fancy stuff and gets back to the basic structure.

Exactly, @rileyp49, you learn to build form with just lines, which helps everything else later.
