A woman at the laundromat in Austin told me her dress was made from old bedsheets

Nice! That's the kind of upcycling I can get behind. My grandma used to do that all the time, turning worn out tablecloths into aprons or flour sack towels into kitchen curtains. It's smart because the fabric is already broken in and super soft. You see a lot of that DIY spirit here in Austin, people making cool stuff from what others would just toss out.

Oh come on, you really think turning raggedy old tablecloths into aprons is some kind of genius move? That stuff is a pain to cut straight on, the fabric's stained and threadbare, and you end up with a weird patchy apron that looks like a quilt from a yard sale. Plus half the time you're just making more work for yourself when you could buy a decent apron for ten bucks that won't fall apart after three washes. I get the nostalgia factor and it's cute your grandma did it, but let's not pretend this is some superior life hack over just buying new fabric. Recycling is fine, but sometimes folks act like using trash is automatically better than using something that actually works right.

Relax, it's just aprons. Nobody's saying you have to start digging through your grandma's linen closet and sewing for three days. If a ten dollar apron from the store works for you, go for it. Some folks just like the challenge of making something useful out of something worn out. Neither way is better, they're just different.
