Warning: wasted $300 on cheap rasps from an online bargain site
I figured I would save some money and bought a 6-pack of rasps for $300 from some discount website. They looked fine in the pictures but after one hoof they were dull as a butter knife. I tried to sharpen them myself and they just chipped and flaked. By the end of the week I had to toss 4 of them because they were completely useless. I ended up buying my usual Nicholson rasps and finishing the job in half the time. Anyone else get burned by those cheap bulk deals online?

Did you read that article in the farrier's magazine last month about the cheap metal alloys they use on those online rasps... apparently they're made from recycled scrap and can't hold an edge no matter what you do. That's rough, I almost bought a similar deal but my buddy told me to steer clear. I don't get why they can't just be honest about the quality instead of using good photos to trick people. Like, $300 isn't pocket change for most of us.

Man that's exactly why I stopped buying gear online unless I've seen it in person. A buddy of mine got burned on a set of rasps that looked perfect in the photos but couldn't cut butter after a week. If you can't find a local shop, at least check the reviews from people who actually shoe horses, not just hobbyists.
