TIL that using a dull rasp on a muddy hoof just makes a total mess of the whole job
Tried to save time by skipping the sharpening on a wet Thursday morning in Columbus and ended up spending 20 extra minutes cleaning out packed gunk and re-doing the whole hoof because the rasp just slid right off, has anyone else had a bad day on a wet horse?

Rained all last Tuesday here in Ohio and I had the same exact problem with my mare's back feet, dull rasp and mud just turned into this slippery paste that kept filling back in every time I tried to clean it out... ended up having to hose her foot off twice and then let it air dry before I could even start. My neighbor swears by keeping a second rasp in the truck for wet days, says you gotta run a file over it every couple horses or it's just a waste of time. I just bought one of those diamond coated rasps last month and it chews through mud way better than steel, but I still managed to drop it in the manure pile on Tuesday... had to fish it out with a pitchfork.

Oh man @diana20, I feel that pain... lost my favorite pick to the creek gods last spring too.
