Remember when settling a bet meant pulling out actual newspapers?

I swear, before the internet went crazy, my grandpa would walk to the corner store just to grab two different papers to fact-check a town rumor. Now everyone just forwards the same screenshot from an uncle's Facebook page and calls it proof, has anyone else seen this shift ruin any good debates at family dinners?

Family dinners just turn into everyone pulling out their phones and yelling "well actually" while nobody even checks the source. It's like nobody trusts basic common sense anymore because everything has to be googled first even when you already know the answer.

We set a rule at our house that if you want to fact check something at dinner, you have to do it after the meal. Phones stay face down in a basket until everyone's finished eating. It stopped the constant interruptions because nobody wants to wait twenty minutes to prove a point about something trivial like what year a movie came out. The trick is getting everyone to agree on it beforehand, not pulling the rule out when things get heated. After a few weeks, people started just letting small things slide and saving the big debates for after dessert.

Honestly though is a little google search at dinner really that big of a deal. If someone says the sky is green you're probably gonna want to check that real quick before you just nod along. Sounds more like your family just likes to argue and the phone is just a convenient excuse.
