Gave up on ring lights after the clip snapped during a live at the flea market last Sunday

The thing broke on a $40 model from Amazon after three months, so I grabbed an old desk lamp with no diffuser and honestly the shadows look more real - anyone else ditch the pro gear for whatever works?

Read somewhere that a bunch of old Hollywood cinematographers actually prefer regular lamps for that gritty, natural look. I switched to a cheap clamp light from the hardware store with a white trash bag over it, works better than my old ring light ever did. The shadows are softer but way more interesting.
