Appreciation post: That 'day in the life' video format everyone's doing now feels different from past trends

Three years ago, the 'get ready with me' trend felt like a quick fad, but last month I noticed my own shop's Instagram getting more views when I posted a real, unedited clip of me troubleshooting a faulty panel in a Cincinnati bungalow, so is this style actually sticking around for the long haul because it feels more genuine?

That Wired article last week talked about how the "slice of life" video is basically the new reality TV. They said platforms are pushing this stuff hard because raw footage keeps people scrolling longer than polished ads. Your bungalow clip probably hit the algorithm sweet spot for "real work" content. But like Jordan said, once every company starts forcing their employees to film "authentic moments" on a schedule, it's over. We'll just get bored and move on to the next thing that feels fresh.

People chase authenticity until it becomes a trend, then it's just another box to check. Your unedited clip worked because it wasn't trying to be a 'day in the life' video, it was just you fixing a panel. The second you start making them because you know they get views, they lose the realness. The format will stick around as long as it gets clicks, but the genuine feeling won't. We're just watching the life cycle of a trend speed up.

The real problem is when the algorithm starts rewarding the fake stuff more than the real. Platforms can't tell the difference between a real moment and a good performance, so they push both equally. That's what finally kills the feeling for good.
