I finally figured out the 'distracted boyfriend' meme after a year of confusion

I kept seeing that distracted boyfriend meme everywhere but I never got why it was supposed to be funny. The dude is looking at another girl while his girlfriend stares at him annoyed. I figured it was just about cheating or something basic. But last week a coworker in my office in Austin finally explained it's more about priorities and what people choose to focus on instead of what they already have. She showed me like 20 different versions where people swapped in brands, hobbies, or even abstract ideas. Has anyone else had a meme click way later than everyone else? I feel like I'm always behind on these things.

Three years? You stuck with it for three full years without knowing? That's some serious dedication to a running joke. Did you just pretend to laugh along when people referenced it hoping nobody would ask you to explain it? I would've caved and googled it after maybe three weeks tops. And a stranger at a bus stop being the one to finally break it down for you is oddly perfect. Did they just walk up and say "here let me explain this burning dog to you" out of the blue? That must have been one memorable bus stop conversation.
