Tracked down a phantom fault in about 20 minutes with a trick from an old timer

We had this one elevator in a 12-story building near downtown that kept throwing a random door zone fault. Drove me nuts for two days. An old mechanic I know told me to check the door operator belt tension by giving it a little twist with my thumb instead of using the gauge. Sure enough, it was way looser than it looked. Has anyone else run into a weird quick test that saved you time on a tough fault?

That twist test sounds absolutely terrifying to me. I can't imagine just trusting a thumb twist on an elevator door operator, those things can be so finicky and dangerous if they fail at the wrong moment. You must have nerves of steel to try that after two days of frustration.

Has anyone actually checked if the door operator has a manual release keyhole hidden somewhere on it? I bet @hannahk19 might be overthinking the twist test when there's probably a simpler emergency bypass that everyone forgets about because it's labeled weird or stuck behind a panel.
