Cable snapped on a Tuesday and I almost lost it

Last week in a 12-story building downtown. Brake seized up on me mid-service. Had to hand-crank the car down three floors. Took me almost 4 hours with a busted knuckle. Anyone else deal with a sudden cable failure on an older Otis model?

Man I used to think cables were indestructible but this changed my mind.

Wait, you hand-cranked it three floors down with a busted knuckle? That sounds like something out of a nightmare. I can't believe you had to do that for four hours. My old building had a similar Otis model and I always wondered what would happen if the cable went mid-trip. You must have been exhausted.
