I was sure the 'freezer trick' for fixing a dead hard drive was total nonsense

Had a client bring in an old Western Digital 1TB drive that wouldn't spin up, and as a last resort I sealed it in a bag and left it in my freezer for about four hours. Plugged it back in and it actually worked long enough to pull their family photos off. I'm still not sure why it worked that one time, but it saved the day. Has anyone else had a freezer fix actually work, or did I just get lucky?

Always thought that was an old wives' tale, but I guess it can work in a pinch.
