I finally gave up on that cheap hot air station from that online marketplace
Burned through about $90 and two full afternoons trying to get it to work right on a simple phone charging port job. The temperature control was all over the place, it would either do nothing or scorch the board in seconds. Ended up melting the plastic on a perfectly good connector because the nozzle slipped. Had to buy the part again and finish the repair with my old, reliable iron. Has anyone found a decent budget station that actually holds a steady heat, or is it just a waste of money to try?

I used to believe the cheap ones were fine for hobby work. After ruining a good laptop motherboard with a similar station, I changed my mind. The thermal runaway is real, it just can't keep up. I saved up for a used name-brand station and the difference in control is night and day.

My experience was the opposite. That exact cheap station has been my daily driver for over a year doing small board work. The trick is to let it heat soak for a solid ten minutes before you trust the readout. I also had to add a bit of kapton tape around the heater for better insulation.
