Had a talk with an old radio guy at a garage sale that made me rethink how I clean flux

I was digging through a box of old test leads at this guy's sale in Portland last Saturday, and he saw me scrubbing a board with isopropyl and a toothbrush. He said 'you're just pushing the junk around, try distilled water and a soft paintbrush instead, let it dry slow.' I laughed it off at first, but I tried it on a crusty old VCR power supply this morning and it worked way better. Has anyone else switched up their cleaning method like that?

Isn't it funny how the simplest, lowest-tech fix is usually the one staring you right in the face the whole time?

Yeah it's almost like we're conditioned to overthink everything when the obvious answer is just sitting there waiting. Most of life's problems would solve themselves if we just stopped and looked before we started tinkering.
