Vent: I lost a full day's pay on a bad voltage tester

Last week I was troubleshooting a tricky lighting circuit in an old house. My old voltage tester gave me a false negative reading, so I spent hours checking connections that were actually live. I finally borrowed a Fluke from another guy on site and found the problem in 10 minutes. That mistake cost me about $300 in lost time and I had to eat the cost. Has anyone else had a tester fail on them like that? What brand do you trust now?

My old Klein still works after like five years of drops.

Hate when that happens. I had a cheap tester die on me mid job, showed no voltage on a live leg. Almost got bit. Now I check my Fluke against a known live source every morning, like an outlet I just powered up. That extra 30 seconds saves so much headache. What's your go to method to double check your gear?

Ever test your Fluke on a dead circuit first, @allen.ivan?
