I was sure a $400 thermal imager was a waste of money for residential work.

My partner bought one for a commercial job, and I borrowed it to trace a phantom load in a 1950s house that was driving the owner crazy. I found a failing receptacle behind a bookcase in under ten minutes, something that would have taken me half a day with traditional methods. What's the one tool you were wrong about that ended up saving your bacon?

My old stud finder seemed silly until it found a pipe I was about to drill into.

That phantom load hunt is a real time saver.

Totally agree with @xena1. Did the same thing with a cheap power monitor, found my old DVD player was a total energy hog (who even uses those anymore). Unplugged it and saw the difference on my next bill.
