TIL those 'magic' drywall patch kits from the hardware store actually work

I had a fist-sized hole in my garage wall from a shelf mishap and was ready to cut a new piece. My neighbor in Mill Woods swore by this pink foam patch kit, so I tried it for $15. You just wet it, press it in, and sand it smooth after it dries. I was sure it would crack or look awful, but you can't even tell where the hole was now. Has anyone else tried these things on bigger repairs?

Wait, you only paid fifteen bucks for it? That's wild, I thought those kits were way more expensive.

Picked one up at Home Depot in Red Deer for $13.99 last month. I had a hole the size of a coffee can lid in my drywall from a doorknob bash. Sanded it flat after it dried and painted it. Took maybe 15 minutes total wait time. The trick I found is to wet it more than you think you need to, and push it way past the hole surface so you have enough material to sand down. Nobody can find the spot now unless I point it out.
