Stumbled on a surprising stat about Edmonton's basement flooding during a DIY forum deep-dive

Honestly, I was just looking up how to seal my own foundation cracks after that big rain we had last month, and I found out that over 60% of Edmonton homes have had some kind of basement seepage issue. I had no idea it was that common around here. Has anyone else noticed a weird increase in water problems after the thaw this year?

Is that 60% stat from older homes or does it include newer builds too? I've been wondering if it's just the aging infrastructure around here or if the ground is actually getting more saturated with all these weird weather patterns. My neighbor's place was built in 2019 and she's already got a musty corner in her basement after that thaw last March. Maybe it's a drainage thing with how the lots are graded now, but I'm not sure if that's the whole picture. Have you noticed if certain neighborhoods seem worse than others for this kind of thing?

Honestly I feel like people get way too worked up about a little musty corner. Your neighbor's house was built in 2019 which means it's probably sealed up so tight it can't breathe, not that the ground is literally turning into a swamp. I've seen basements that look like a science experiment and it's usually just the owner never running a dehumidifier or checking the gutters. Plus that "60% stat" you mentioned sounds like one of those numbers someone made up to sell you a waterproofing service. I bet if you walked through a hundred basements right now, 90% of them would be totally fine unless someone's letting their downspout dump right against the foundation.
