Shoutout to the guy who made me ditch my old caulking gun
I've been using a cheap $10 caulking gun from Home Depot for years and just figured that's how caulking felt. Last month I was helping a buddy in St. Albert tile his backsplash and he handed me his $40 dripless gun. I laid down a bead on the first try that was actually smooth and even. That whole time I thought I was bad at caulking, turns out my tool was just junk. Has anyone else had a cheap tool make them think they sucked at a job for way too long?

Man, does that ever ring a bell... I went through the same thing with my old putty knife, thought I just couldn't get the hang of taping drywall for years. Turns out a stiff, bent blade was making me mess up every corner and flat seam. It's wild how fast you go from feeling like a total hack to a pro with just one decent tool upgrade. Those cheap guns are a trap for sure, they make you doubt your own skills when the real problem is just shaky hardware.

@derek994 nailed it with the drywall tape thing, that's a perfect example. My buddy Greg spent three summers fighting with a bent mud pan that kept leaving ridges in his corners, and he finally threw it in the trash after borrowing my stainless one for five minutes. He said the same thing, went from hating the job to actually enjoying it just because the tool didn't fight him the whole time. A good spreader or caulking gun is honestly worth the extra $30 just for your own sanity.
