I was checking the city website for permit rules and found a weird rule about sheds

I mean, I was looking up if I needed a permit for a backyard shed on the Edmonton city site, and it says you don't need one if it's under 10 square meters, which is cool. But then it also says it can't be within 1 meter of any property line, which is way stricter than I thought. Found that out after I already bought the lumber, so now I have to redo my whole layout. Has anyone else run into this and had to move their shed plans?

Oh man, that's a bummer about the lumber. One thing I want to gently point out though - that 1 meter rule from the property line, it's measured from the edge of your roof overhang, not just the shed walls. So if you have a little bit of eaves sticking out, that counts toward your distance. I learned that the hard way when I built a small greenhouse and had to pull it back an extra few inches. Just something to check with your tape measure before you start digging post holes.

My old shed was 0.8 meters from the fence and I got a warning. I ended up building a simple gravel pad exactly one meter in, which solved it. Just measure twice before you start digging.

Check if your fence is actually on the property line first, because sometimes people build them a few inches inside. @emery_lopez getting that warning is a good reminder the city does check. Did you already pour a concrete base or are you still on dirt, because moving gravel is way easier than breaking up slab.
