Had a guy at Rona argue that big box caulking is the same as pro grade
I walked out with both tubes because I couldn't decide and now my shower is half done with two different beads.

Have you ever actually tested what happens when you let both dry side by side on a piece of plastic? I did that once with a cheap tube and a pro grade tube, and the cheap stuff turned into a crumbly mess after a month while the pro stuff stayed flexible. The difference isn't how thick it feels going on, it's how it holds up over time (and trust me, nobody wants to redo a shower because the caulk cracked in six months). Your half and half shower might actually be a good test bed to see which one fails first, then you'll know for next time.
