Found a 1950s drill press in my uncle's garage last weekend

Brought it home and spent three hours trying to get the seized chuck off with penetrating oil and a pipe wrench before I realized the locking collar was just finger tight. Has anyone else found old tools that almost fought back?

Three hours man, that's brutal but honestly peak old tool energy. I spent a whole afternoon once trying to muscle a stuck arbor off a 1940s Craftsman drill press only to find out the set screw was just painted over and needed a simple tap with a hammer to break loose. Those old machines have a way of making you feel like you're wrestling a bear when the real problem is a tiny piece of rust or a loose screw you just can't see. At least you didn't snap the pipe wrench handle off like I did on a seized vice, that was a real kick in the pants.

Hold on, did you say you snapped the handle off a pipe wrench on a seized vice? I gotta ask, how exactly did that happen? Were you using a cheater bar on it? I've got a 24-inch Rigid that I've put some serious torque on, but I've never come close to breaking a handle. Usually the jaws just slip or the teeth round off on me.
