Finally got my garage organized with a pegboard trick I saw on YouTube

I spent 3 years piling tools on a workbench because I thought pegboards looked tacky, but last week I mounted one and used a color coded system for the hooks. It cost me about 40 bucks total and now I can actually find my hammer without digging through drawers. Has anyone else tried painting the pegboard to match your wall instead of leaving it white?

Our local hardware store had a workshop on garage organization last fall and the instructor mentioned painting pegboard to match the wall. He said to use a foam roller not a brush, otherwise the paint drips through the holes and makes a mess. I tried it with a light gray that matched my garage walls and it looks a lot nicer than the raw white board. The hooks pop against the dark color too, so I can spot my tools faster. Just make sure you sand the edges first or they'll chip after a few months of heavy use.

Honestly I was always skeptical that painting pegboard was worth the effort since the white ones seemed fine to me. But you making the point about spotting tools faster against a darker color actually makes a lot of sense, I never thought about that. Tbh I might try this now with a light blue or something that matches my garage since I'm tired of squinting at my wrenches.
