Bought a $200 dehumidifier for my basement and it paid for itself in 3 months

Spending $200 on something that just pulls water out of the air seems like a scam to me. My basement's been damp for years and I just run a box fan down there, costs me maybe $5 a month in electricity. @ray363 that "paying for itself" line only works if you actually had mold or damage happening, most people are just fine with a little musty smell. Unless you're storing expensive antiques or electronics down there, a dehumidifier is just another gadget that eats electricity and needs emptying every day.

Dude that paid for itself line is exactly what happened with mine too. I got one for like $150 after my basement started smelling musty and after a few months I was pulling gallons of water out of there every week. It literally saved me from having to replace a bunch of stored stuff and honestly made the whole house feel less humid too.

And now my basement smells like a clean rain forest instead of a damp sock... guess I traded one problem for a slightly less embarrassing one.
