Appreciation post: My plumber friend in Mill Woods said he uses a $12 wax ring from Totem, not the $40 ones.

He told me the expensive ones are overkill for most Edmonton houses and the cheap ones last just as long if you set them right. Anyone else find the pricier parts are sometimes just marketing?

Wait, they're only $12 now? I paid way more last year...

Actually, that's a pretty bad take from your plumber friend. Sure, the wax ring might seal fine today, but a $12 part from Totem in a city with our freeze-thaw cycles? Houses settle, floors shift, and that cheap ring can crack or flatten out way faster than a proper reinforced one. A $40 ring often has a rubber collar or thicker wax that handles movement without leaking. Paying for peace of mind and not having to pull a toilet again in two years sounds worth it to me. Cheap parts work until they don't, and then you're dealing with water damage and mold.

Sounds about right for a lot of trades.
