Am I the only one who thinks the city's new deck permit rules are actually a good thing?
Last week, my neighbor in Mill Woods built a deck that started sagging after 3 days because he skipped the permit and used undersized joists. The new rules feel like they're just trying to stop that kind of unsafe work from happening around here.

My deck failed inspection last year, had to redo the whole thing.

Wish I could agree, but the rules have gotten way too strict. My brother tried to build a simple platform deck last year and the permit fees and wait times cost more than the lumber. It feels like they're punishing everyone for a few bad jobs instead of just going after the actual unsafe builds.

Remember when a permit was just a piece of paper and not a second mortgage? Now you need a city planner's blessing to hammer two boards together. My neighbor's shed paperwork weighed more than the shed itself. We've traded common sense for a filing fee.
