A guy at the Totem hardware store said he uses vinegar to clean his paint sprayer

I was buying a new tip for my sprayer and the guy in line behind me mentioned he just uses plain white vinegar and warm water to flush his out after latex jobs. He said he does it right away and lets it sit for about 20 minutes before a final rinse. It got me thinking about how many harsh cleaners I've bought over the years. Has anyone else tried this method on their sprayers, or is there a better local tip for keeping them clean?

That vinegar trick works because it's a mild acid that breaks down the paint. It's a lot gentler on the seals and gaskets than those strong chemical cleaners. Just make sure you do a really good water rinse afterwards.

Totally agree about the gentler on seals part. I used some harsh store bought stuff once and it wrecked the o-ring on my old gun. @nancy_smith is right, a good long rinse with the hose after the vinegar soak is key, otherwise you get that faint smell forever.

My sprayer's probably cleaner than my coffee mug after reading that.
