Walked a site with a crane operator in St. Albert, he called out my tape measure habit
Last month I was checking a foundation pour on 215th Street and this guy, Dennis, had been running cranes for 25 years. He watched me re-measure a setback three times and said, 'you trust that tape more than your eyes, that's how we miss grade.' He showed me his method, just eyeballed the line and hammered a stake, and it was dead on. Anyone else have a contractor tell them to stop overthinking something that should be simple?
Man that Dennis sounds like the kind of guy who's been burned by his own nerves before and learned to chill. It's wild how we all get locked into this overchecking loop, not just on job sites but everywhere. Like people will google a recipe five times before boiling pasta or re-read a text three times before hitting send. We got all these tools to measure and double check stuff, but sometimes they just feed the anxiety instead of fixing it. The older guys grew up when you had to trust your gut cause you didn't have another option, and honestly that might be the real skill they're passing along.
