Vent: My basement Reno went sideways because of a so-called 'pro' contractor last month

Hired a guy from a Facebook ad in Edmonton to do my basement framing and drywall. He quoted me $4,500 cash, said it'd take 10 days tops. After 3 weeks he'd only done half the framing and left gaps everywhere. I fired him and had to bring in someone else from a referral my buddy gave me, cost me an extra $1,200 to fix the mess. Has anyone else been burned by social media contractors here?

Trusting a Facebook contractor is like trusting a stranger on the bus to hold your wallet. I've learned the hard way that social media ads are basically a red flag with a like button attached. At least you got out before he disappeared with the whole $4,500.

But the thing nobody talks about is how these scammers actually build trust by posting real progress pics of other projects for months before they even start fishing for big money. They play the long game, you know, like they'll do a couple small legit jobs for cheap just to get that "look they delivered!" reputation going. Makes it way harder to spot because your brain wants to believe the first few good experiences are the real deal, not bait.
