That week in July with Basement Renos was a nightmare
We hired Basement Renos to finish our basement. Day one they showed up late. Day three they broke a water pipe. Flooded the whole space. $3,200 in damage to my stored stuff. They left a crew alone on Friday and they just left at noon. I had to call the owner. He blamed his guys. Has anyone else had a crew just walk off like that?

... so a crew just dipped out at noon on a Friday without saying anything? That's unbelievable, I've heard plenty of contractor horror stories but that's a whole new level of unprofessional. Did the owner at least offer to pay for your damaged stuff or did he just shrug it off?

My friend had a similar thing happen last year with a kitchen remodel crew. They showed up late every day, then on a Wednesday they just stopped coming altogether after breaking a cabinet door. The owner was totally useless, kept saying "the guy will be back tomorrow" for two weeks before my friend finally hired someone else to fix the mess. Ended up costing way more than the original quote just to get it done right.

Hearing this totally flipped my thinking on contractors honestly. I used to be like "oh they're all basically the same just pick one with good reviews" but your story about them leaving at noon on a Friday is insane. My neighbor had a cabinet guy last fall who took a three hour lunch every day and left early twice a week, I defended him saying he was probably just disorganized. But after reading your water damage story and the owner blaming his own crew I realize I was making excuses for lazy people who don't care. Now I'm thinking a crew walking off like that is a huge red flag I'd never brush off again.
