Paid a $1200 deposit to a contractor who ghosted me mid-project

Back in March I hired a local crew to redo my basement floor after a water damage claim. They took $1200 upfront for materials, showed up two days, then stopped answering texts and calls. I drove by their shop address on 99 Street and it was locked up with a for lease sign. Took me six weeks to find out the guy had been running three different company names. Has anyone else had luck getting money back through small claims or the city license board, or is that cash just gone?
