Overheard a drywaller say mud quality doesn't matter, had to bite my tongue

I was grabbing supplies at Home Depot in South Edmonton last Tuesday and heard two guys arguing about joint compound. One said any brand works the same and the other was getting pretty worked up about it. I just kept walking but it got me thinking about how many corners people cut on the finishing side. Anybody else notice a big difference between cheap mud and the premium stuff, or am I overthinking it?

Heard a similar thing with painters and cheap primer. It's wild how people will spend hours on prep work then use the cheapest stuff they can find and wonder why it doesn't look right. I mean, it's like cooking a good steak but using the worst seasoning you can find, the foundation matters even if you can't see it in the end. Some folks just don't wanna learn the hard way until they have to redo it.

Wait, people actually use cheap primer after doing all that prep work? That's like sanding a car for three hours then using spray paint from the dollar store. You'd think they'd realize the paint is only as good as what's underneath it.
