Hired a framing crew that was 3 weeks late and $4k over budget

Honestly, I used to just hire whoever had the cheapest quote for my basement reno. Last summer I went with a guy who bid $8k for framing and drywall. He showed up late every day, took twice as long, and then hit me with a $4k change order for 'unforeseen issues.' Now I always ask for a detailed timeline in the contract and check if they've done work in my area before. Has anyone else had a contractor try to add surprise fees halfway through a job?

You ever get that sinking feeling when they pull out a "materials surcharge" after you already agreed on a price? Reminds me of the time my plumber tried to bill me extra for using his own truck to get parts.

Oh yeah, that's the worst. I once paid extra for them to "source" the exact part sitting in their garage.
