Worst week ever was patching a water-damaged ceiling in a 1970s split-level

The old plaster and lath was completely shot, and the homeowner wanted it blended with the existing texture, which was this weird, thick popcorn. Took me three days just to get the base coat right without it cracking. Anyone know a good method for matching that specific era's ceiling finish?

My 1978 house has that same impossible texture on every ceiling.

That "popcorn" texture from the 70s is actually a spray-on acoustic ceiling. It's not just thick plaster, it's a mix with vermiculite. Trying to blend a patch with just joint compound is going to crack every time. You need to use a setting-type compound for the base, then a texture spray can from the hardware store for the final coat. Even then, matching it perfectly is a huge pain.

So is that texture spray stuff a total nightmare to use?
