Took me 3 days to fix a corner bead that should've taken 2 hours, was the mud or my method?

I had this outside corner in a hallway in Denver that kept cracking no matter how I feathered it, finally realized I wasn't wetting the paper tape enough before the first coat, but is the extra moisture worth the wait on a tight schedule or do you guys just use metal corner beads and avoid the problem altogether?
