The floating corner trick I saw a guy do on a hotel job in Nashville
Last month I was doing a hallway on the third floor of a hotel reno, and the guy next to me had a corner that kept blowing out no matter what he did. He told me he stopped using paper tape on inside corners that sit right next to a vent, because the air movement dries the mud too fast and makes it crack. He switched to mesh tape with a 20 minute setting mud, then did a thin coat, waited 10 minutes, and hit it again with a wider knife. I tried it on two corners back home and both came out flat with zero cracks after a week. Has anyone else run into vent-adjacent corners being more trouble, or is this just a Nashville thing?

What is it about hotel vents that turn a simple corner into a science experiment, right? @bettyfox is out here acting like she's got a PhD in airborne dust and chemical soup, and honestly, she might be onto something. I always figured it was just the drying too fast, but now I'm picturing tiny particles of old fryer grease landing on my mud like it's a gourmet meal. Next time I'll bring a wet rag and a hazmat suit, maybe that'll do the trick. Either way, I'm still gonna steal that mesh tape method, just in case the vent is secretly run by a ghost with a grudge.

Think about what that vent is actually blowing OUT of it. In hotels, the HVAC runs almost nonstop, and it's not just dry air, it's got dust and cleaning chemicals and sometimes even tiny oil particles from the kitchen exhaust if the ductwork is shared. That film lands right on your wet mud and messes with the bond. I did a job near a pool once, the chlorine air ate through regular joint compound in a month. So it might not be the drying speed, it's the CONTAMINANTS in the air. Try wiping the corner down with a damp rag and letting it dry completely before you even tape it. Or use a setting compound with a little extra water mixed in to slow the cure down. That vent is basically a tiny wind tunnel with a chemistry set attached.
