Tbh my uncle told me to use a 6 inch knife for ceilings and man was he wrong

I was doing a living room ceiling last week in Phoenix and he swore by the 6 inch for taping inside corners up there. Said it gives you more control. Ngl I tried it for like 10 feet and it was a mess. Way too many passes and the mud was piling up. Switched back to my 10 inch and finished the whole room in half the time. Has anyone else had an older guy give you advice that straight up doesn't work for your style?

Old timers always mean well (bless their hearts) but a 6 inch is really for small patch work not full ceiling runs. Modern mud dries faster too so piling it up with too many passes just makes a mess before you can smooth it. A 10 inch is definitely the move for getting ceilings done quick without all the frustration.

Way too many passes and the mud was piling up" - that's exactly what my buddy Jeff ran into when his grandpa told him to use a 5 inch knife for doing corners on a garage ceiling. He fought with it for like an hour, got frustrated, and finally called me to ask what he was doing wrong. I told him to just grab an 8 inch and he finished the rest in no time. Some of that older advice just doesn't hold up when you're actually working with modern materials and your own pace...
