Question about mixing mud for a ceiling patch

I always thought adding more water made the mud easier to spread, but it just sags on a ceiling. A guy on a job in Tempe showed me his mix, which was way thicker, and it held perfectly. What's your go-to consistency for overhead work?

Exactly, @joseph_torres, you need the right trowel angle.

Thick mud sags worse, you just need better technique on the trowel.
