My last three projects all specified smooth drywall finishes
I used to see texture on every ceiling and wall. Now, it's rare. Last month, I had a kitchen remodel where the homeowner wanted a perfect smooth finish. We spent extra time getting the mud just right. My partner kept saying we should ask for more money for this level of detail. I agree. The extra sanding means more dust, but the look is worth it. I've started adding a smooth finish fee in my quotes. It's becoming common in my area.

Smooth is just the basic standard now, not some premium upgrade.

Do you recall when every new house had textured walls? My first home had that orange peel finish all over, and it collected dust like crazy. Cleaning it was a nightmare, so I can see why smooth finishes are preferred now. Back then, textures hid a lot of flaws, but now with better materials, smooth finishes are easier to do. It shows how building standards have gotten better.

Charging extra for a smooth finish is totally fair. The labor and cleanup are way more intense than a basic texture job. Clients who want that perfect look will understand the added cost.
