Finally got my butt joints to lay flat after 8 months of fighting them
I've been hanging drywall for just over a year now and my butt joints always had these little humps that showed up after mudding. My buddy Mike stopped by my job at a condo in Phoenix last Tuesday and watched me for 10 minutes. He just said 'your tapered edge is sitting on top of the factory edge' and showed me how to stagger the sheets better. After 4 panels with his method, they all came out perfectly flush. Has anyone else had a simple trick like that take forever to click?

Man, wait, hold on. 8 months? You fought butt joints for 8 months? That's crazy to me. I hit that same wall about 3 months into drywalling and I was ready to throw my mud pan through a window. My dad finally told me to stop trying to make the factory edges sit on top of each other. He said to just let the tapered sides fall where they naturally want to and the flat part will hang lower. It took me like 3 tries to even understand what he meant, but once I did, my joints went from looking like pancakes to being glass smooth. So yeah, I totally feel your pain, that one little tip is the whole game changer.
