Changed my mind on drywall storage after a costly mistake
I used to think storing drywall outside was fine if it was just for a short while. Then one job got delayed by rain, and the boards swelled up. Had to toss them and start over. Now I see other installers using tarps every time, and I do too. It's a small habit that prevents big problems and keeps projects on track.

Remember reading in JLC about how the paper facing on drywall acts like a sponge. Even a little dampness from morning dew under eaves can make it wick up moisture and swell at the edges over a couple days. That small detail changed how I see 'keeping it off the ground'.

So you say tarps prevent big problems, but I've never used them. My crews store drywall outside all the time. We just keep it off the ground under some eaves. A little rain won't ruin it if you're smart. Tarps add cost and slow down the job. That swelling issue is a rare thing if you plan right.

Seriously, @patriciab87? I've seen drywall swell after one unexpected downpour. Tarps are cheap insurance.
