Why does nobody mention cutterhead wrap in soft mud?
I was working a job on the Sabine River last month and spent almost 3 hours clearing wrap off my cutterhead. It was that sticky soft mud everyone says is easy to push through. The problem is guys don't talk about keeping your RPMs low in that mud or you'll wrap it up bad. How do you all handle soft mud without getting wrapped every 20 minutes?

Run that cutterhead slow and keep your suction just enough to hold the face, that's all it takes to stop the wrap.

Honestly @gavin_kelly91 nailed it, same principle applies to not rushing through life or you just end up tangled.

Oh man, @nancy_ross is totally right, it's like fighting the mud instead of working with it! I've been through the same mess on the Sabine, and the trick is to run your cutterhead around 25-30 RPM max in that sticky stuff. Keep your swing speed slow too, don't try to cut a full width at once, just nibble at the face. And yeah, like @gavin_kelly91 said, only use enough suction to hold you against the face, too much vacuum just pulls that mud into the cutter and wraps you up. I also learned to back off and wash the cutterhead every 15 minutes or so before the wrap gets bad. It's annoying but beats spending hours with a pry bar and a knife.
