Vent: Overheard a young guy call dredging 'just digging a ditch underwater'

I was grabbing coffee last week and heard some kid telling his friend that our job is just digging a ditch underwater. Like he had no clue about the pump curves, the cutterhead maintenance, or how one wrong move can blow out a hull seal. I've been running a 12-inch cutter suction dredge for 15 years on the Mississippi River and I remember when we did everything by feel and sound. Now we've got GPS and sonar but that still doesn't teach you how to read the sediment. Anyone else get annoyed when people act like this job is simple?

Tell that kid he's actually not wrong when you strip it down to basics. We're moving material from point A to point B underwater and that's the core of what a ditch digger does too. The fancy tech and the experience you mention just make us more efficient at doing exactly what he described. Getting all defensive about it makes us sound like baristas who get mad when someone calls pouring hot water over grounds "just making coffee." And honestly if I told my grandfather who ran a dragline with a hand crank that I needed 15 years of experience to run a GPS guided dredge he'd laugh me out of the room.
