Overheard a guy at the supply house say all dredge pumps are basically the same

I was grabbing some fittings last Tuesday and this younger operator was telling the counter guy that a pump is a pump and you're just wasting money on brand names. That kind of talk just rubs me the wrong way because I've spent 22 years running dredges on the Mississippi River and I can tell you for a fact that cheap impellers fail twice as fast when you're digging through sand and gravel mix. My crew and I ran a job near Baton Rouge where we switched from a standard pump to a heavy duty one and our downtime dropped from about 8 hours a week to maybe 2. The difference is in the wear plate thickness and the way the casing handles the slurry, not just the name on the side. So has anyone here actually run both budget and premium pumps side by side on the same material?

Have you tried running a budget pump on something with a lot of coarse gravel in the mix? I was skeptical too until I put a cheaper pump on a rocky river job and the impeller was shot after three weeks, while my buddy's premium pump on the same stretch lasted over six months. Real world experience beats any sales pitch in my book.

So you're telling me that spending twice as much on a pump is ALWAYS worth it no matter what you're pumping? I've seen plenty of jobs where the fancy pump went down with a seal leak while the cheap one just kept chugging along because it didn't have all those extra parts to break. @lisaf38, I bet that Army Corps study was done on clean, consistent material, not the mixed-up junk we actually deal with in the field. And felixlee, maybe your buddy's pump lasted longer because he was running slower and didn't push it as hard, not because of the price tag. I've had a budget pump outlast a premium one on straight mud jobs where the only difference was the operator.
