The unedited zoom call that made me check every mic before every meeting

Last month I was on a call with 40 people from three different stations. One guy forgot to mute after a bathroom break and spent a full minute describing the tile grout issue in his apartment. Nobody said anything in the chat, but the moderator ended the call early. Ever since, I do a 10 second mic test before I even open the meeting app. Has anyone else had a moment like that where one clumsy audio slip just rewired your whole routine?

Muting is like the easiest thing to do, you click one button and it's done. The real issue is people not paying attention for two seconds before they open their mouth. I get that the tile story was awkward but ending the whole call early feels like a massive overreaction. Like you're all adults on a work call, somebody says something dumb and you just move on. Now you do a 10 second mic test every time, that sounds exhausting for no real payoff. If somebody can't handle a grout comment, that's their problem, not yours.

Ha, wait until you hear about the guy on my old team who thought he was muted and spent five minutes complaining about his boss's "aggressive email tone" only to find out the boss was literally running the meeting! Honestly, the mic test is genius, that grout guy is now living in my head rent free every time I click that tiny speaker icon. I give you full permission to start every call with "can everyone hear the sound of my dignity dying?" just to break the tension.
