Rant: That 'premium' drafting pencil set cost me a full day of work
I saw a fancy set of mechanical pencils online last month, the kind with a heavy brass barrel and special lead. They were $120. I convinced myself they'd make my line work smoother. The lead kept snapping on every other curve, and the grip was awful for long sessions. I had to redo a whole set of elevation drawings from scratch, basically losing a full day's pay. Anyone have a go-to pencil that actually holds up under pressure?

Oof, "redo a whole set of elevation drawings" sounds like a nightmare. I read a piece by an architect who said the fanciest tools are often just jewelry for your desk. He swore by the basic Pentel GraphGear 500 for actual drafting, said the knurled metal grip is perfect and the lead feed is super reliable. He mentioned using 2B lead in it for smooth lines without the snap. Sometimes the cheap stuff is just better for real work.

Honestly, the real problem is that fancy gear makes you overthink every line. Tbh I switched back to a basic pencil and my speed doubled because I stopped babying the tool.

@the_holly got me curious about that GraphGear 500, but andrew's point about the pencil is wild. So did you switch to a plain wooden pencil or something like a mechanical one with no frills? Really wondering if the grip or the weight of the tool is what's actually tripping people up.
