I bought a $35 laser level off an online deal last month for a kitchen remodel layout. It looked fine at first, but the line drifted about 3/16 over 12 feet, I didn't catch it until the cabinets were hung crooked. Cost me two extra days and roughly $200 in rework materials to fix. Check the calibration specs before you trust anything under $100, or borrow a buddy's unit first. Has anyone else gotten burned by a budget tool like that?
Yikes, that drift is brutal and 3/16 over 12 feet is exactly the kind of thing you don't notice until it's too late. I read a tool review a while back where a guy tested a bunch of sub $50 levels against a known good one, and almost all of them were off by at least an eighth over 10 feet. One was even worse, something like a quarter inch, and the manual actually said "for general reference only" in tiny print. So basically they're selling you a straight-ish line, not a real level. For framing or hanging cabinets you really need to spend more or borrow a good one, like you said.
